This policy governs the courthouse before it governs the filer. Judicial branch officers and employees may only use generative AI tools that the judiciary has procured or approved, and may not circumvent the rule by using such tools on personal devices or systems.
Two limits stand out. Content from a generative AI tool may not be used verbatim, which makes the output a draft rather than a product. And neither AI nor generative AI may be used to process particular categories of information named in the policy. Lawyers and litigants are addressed separately and more lightly: they are reminded to use caution when relying on any output.
